'The charm works well'


An illustrated presentation from Dr. John Snelson entitled 'Sullivan's Sorcery: 1871 and All That'.


In the 150th anniversary year of the premiere of The Sorcerer, Dr. John Snelson explores Sullivan’s contribution to this first two-act work with Gilbert.  How does it relate to their first collaboration, the curtain raiser Trial by Jury? What did Sullivan bring to The Sorcerer and how did he develop from it? Music examples and piano demonstration may discover some marvellous illusions rather than terrible surprises.

Dr. John Snelson is an expert on music and theatre who worked for 20 years for the Royal Opera House. He lectures at Goldsmiths, University of London, and has published on Opera and Musical Theatre.  He has had an interest in Gilbert and Sullivan since his teenage, when he played for amateur operatic societies on the Wirral.
