Biographies
Mezzo-soprano Kate Lowe is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music (MA, Dist., 2020) where she received commendations in two Academy competitions. As part of the RAM Opera Scenes, she performed roles including Nancy (Albert Herring, Britten) and Smeton (Anna Bolena, Donizetti), and Chorus for Royal Academy Opera's Semele (Handel). Whilst at RAM, Kate was also on the Philharmonia Chorus Student Scheme and was supported by the Josephine Baker Trust. She recently performed in the chorus of Regent Opera’s La Forza del Destino, and has toured several times as a soloist with the National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company. Kate previously studied at Cambridge University (BA Education with English), and is currently a Foundation Singer at St Nicolas Church, Guildford, an online English Language and Literature, and singing teacher at St Catherine’s School, Bramley.
Duncan Appleby studied piano with Philip Martin at Birmingham Conservatoire and Kathron Sturrock at the Royal College of Music (RCM). He was the youngest pianist invited to accompany Robin Bowman’s renowned song classes and frequently played for singers for auditions and various competitions. From the final of the Brooks van der Pump English Song Prize to contemporary orchestral works, Duncan showcased his versatility.
Duncan is active in London's music scene, accompanying young singers on the Samling Scholarship programme and for Dulwich Opera Company. His performances extended to unique venues such as accompanying guitarist Sam Brown on a fortepiano at the RCM Museum of Instruments and celebrating the Persian New Year at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Duncan particularly enjoys tackling demanding repertoire such as the Brahms Horn Trio which he performed at the Notting Hill Piano Trio Festival.
Away from the concert platform, he enjoys teaching and is former Head of Keyboard at St Catherine’s School in Bramley, Surrey. He has worked as an organist in Edinburgh as well as serving as a lay clerk at St. George’s Cathedral, Southwark, and recently performed the tenor solo arias in a concert performance of Bach’s St John Passion. For the last two years, he has led Guildford's male-voice barbershop chorus, where his contagious enthusiasm and energy help the singers enjoy rehearsals while improving their standard of performance.
